Testing for Intelligence

Testing for Intelligence

I work at an early childhood development center. At the beginning of the year we give each child an assessment. This assessment is giving to see what the child already knows, and what we need to focus on. Giving these assessments give us a better understanding of the child. At the end of the year we retake the same assessment with the child. This is how we measure the growth, and see what the child learned.

In Finland, they take a totally opposite approach on their students then the United States. In the United States we focus on using test to hold educators and school district accountable (The Hechinger Report’s Lessons From Abroad blog., n.d.) In Finland they focus on the learning. In Finland they believe that they need less test based on accountability.

I personally enjoy the assessments in the sense of measuring the growth of children. These assessments help us better understand the children and we can find different ways to teach and help them learn.

  1. I find that the assessment helps the teacher to know where the child is, but then sometimes the child may know those things but not the things to help them in Kindergarten. We as professionals, have to do things to help the children grasp the information that they need to help them.

  2. I agree that testing helps to measure growth more clearly. Having a student take the same test at the beginning and end of the year demonstrates the acquired knowledge. However, requiring less tests, such as in Finland, provides opportunity for other measures of learning.

I like that your school gives the same assessment in the beginning and at the end of the year to measure growth. I like assessments because it helps teachers in the classroom to see their students abilities. It also shapes lesson plans for students. I like Finland's approach as well because it gives their students the ability to explore.
