NAEYC
and DEC ideals
I-1.12: “To work with families to provide a safe
and smooth transition as children and families move from one program to the
next” (NAEYC, 2005) .
Transitioning can be very hard for
families and children. This ideal is very significant to me because I work with
pre-k and I have to prepare them for kindergarten. When I discuss kindergarten
they all get afraid and say “I don’t want to go kindergarten, I want to stay
here forever”. That’s when I have to
bring out my kindergarten’s books and start talking about it and prepare them
to get ready. Once I start talking about it more and encourage parents to talk
about it my children transition goes very smoothly.
I-2.2:
“To develop relationships of mutual
trust and create partnerships with the families we serve” (NAEYC, 2005) .
This ideal is very significant to me
because having a relationship with your families is very important. Once you
build relationships and have trust it is so much easier to work with the
families. It opens so many doors for instance better communication, more parent
involvement. In some cases you even see a difference in the children.
“We shall demonstrate in our behavior
and language respect and appreciation for the unique value and human potential
of each child” (The Division for Early
Childhood., 2000) .
This ideal is very significant to me
because each child is different. It is not our job to judge them but to help
them. Children learn best by what they see so it is up to us as educators to show
them how to be respectful and that we appreciate them every change we get.
